By now, you’re probably wondering what this project will entail, right?  Well, first, our class will split into small groups of 2-3 people (pre-selected by Mrs. Cullin) to research the major natural disaster that has occurred within each region.

Once you know your group members, you will select the natural disaster that you’d like to research and work together to create a poster detailing what typically happens during this type of event and how your specific location was affected after the disaster occurred.  ***Keep in mind that this is social studies (not science!), so only a small portion of your poster will describe what happens during your disaster (i.e. how & why it forms/occurs).  Your main focus will be on what happens after the natural disaster has taken place.  You’ll need to consider the changes to the physical land, the changes in human activities, economic impacts, and governmental actions & responsibilities while researching to create your poster.

Finally, you’ll listen to your peers’ presentations to compare and contrast the effects of all four types of disasters in order to determine where you want to build your dream house.  Individually, you will write a persuasive essay (approximately 1-2 pages in length) describing why you chose that location and effectively persuades others to do so too, based on the information that was presented to our class.
