Congratulations!
You’ve just won a brand new home!!

Now, before you start building your new mega-mansion on the shores of Lake Michigan, you need to know that there is one major stipulation you must comply with in order to redeem your prize: you must build your home in one of the following 4 locations:

·  San Francisco, California

·  New Orleans, Louisiana

·  Greensburg, Kansas

·  Mt. St. Helens area, Washington

Unfortunately, each of these locations is located within an area that is prone to a natural disaster!  San Francisco is prone to earthquakes, New Orleans was devastated by a hurricane, Greensburg was leveled by a tornado, and Mt. St. Helens is an active volcano.  (Bummer – there’s always a catch to those “free” prizes, isn’t there?)  So, how will you choose the best location to build your dream house?

Here’s a suggestion: use what you’ve learned this year in our study of the five themes of geography to learn about how each of these four natural disasters affects the physical land, the people within each area, the economy, and the actions the government must take to help its citizens.  Researching all of this should help you determine which region you’re most willing to call home!
